Gave my friend a key but he needs to buy game

I gave my friend an extra key I had, and he redeemed it, but when he tried to download the game on PS5, he said he needed to buy the game on PS5. I have no clue how to do this on console because I'm on PC so if someone could help that would be appreciated.
